UAE company naming rules: what passes and what gets rejected

Roughly one in five proposed names hits a rule on first submission. The rules are consistent once you know them, and knowing them is the difference between same-day reservation and a week of resubmissions.

The hard rejections

  • Names of God and religious references, in any language
  • Political terms, country names used alone, and anything referencing rulers or government bodies
  • Protected brand names: registering 'Tesla Trading FZE' fails on trademark conflict
  • Offensive or indecent words, judged conservatively
  • Names identical or confusingly similar to existing UAE registrations
  • Sector terms that imply regulation you do not hold: bank, insurance, university, exchange

Structural requirements

Names generally need at least one real word; strings of initials alone struggle, and single generic words face similarity objections. If a person's name appears, it should be a shareholder's, in full. The legal suffix, FZE, FZCO, LLC, attaches automatically by entity type, so leave it out of your proposal.

Transliteration matters too: the Arabic rendering of your name registers alongside the Latin one, and objectionable meanings in either language count.

Practical tactics that clear first time

  • Coined words and compounds pass most reliably: made-up names carry no baggage
  • Bring three candidates ranked; reservation moves to the next instantly on objection
  • Search UAE trademark and licence databases before falling in love with a name
  • Check the .ae and .com domains at the same time; a clear name with no domain is half a name
  • Avoid geographic terms unless you hold the connection: 'Dubai' inside a name draws extra scrutiny and fees in some jurisdictions

How reservation actually works

You propose, the authority checks against its register and the rules, and an approved name holds for a defined window, typically 30 to 90 days depending on jurisdiction, while the licence completes. Our checker on this site runs the public rule set instantly; final confirmation always comes from the registry itself, which is the check we complete before you pay anything.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my own name for the company?

Yes, shareholders can use their full personal names, and it is one of the smoother routes through approval. Partial names and other people's names are where objections start.

Can I rename my company later?

Yes, every jurisdiction processes name amendments, typically AED 1,500 to 3,500 plus updated documents, bank records and marketing. Cheaper to get it right the first time, but not a trap.

Does my company name have to match my brand name?

No. Plenty of companies trade under brand names that differ from the licence name; invoices and contracts carry the legal name. Some zones also register trade names against an existing licence.
